Gmail Tip — The + tag

I quite well know that Gmail is gaining popularity on the Webmail front as Firefox is on the Browser front.Ok apart from the slick interface and speedy response..there are some more tricks under the hood that Gmail is capable of.Like the most famous “File storage” facility. But since i just use gmail for email so let me present something that is meant just for that.

Plus Tag
Is a feature that allows a user to add anything after a plus symbol to the mail address i.e bala+shoutsofnothingness@gmail.com.Now this is the same as bala@gmail.com.

So how is this going to impact your gmail usage?..read on

I am sure that you are aware of the “labels” feature is Gmail, ‘labels’ are what ‘folders’ are to other webmails. So once you label a mail or mails.(ofcourse you have to create one first!by selecting the option from the drop down menu..)you can view all mail(s) with that particular label seperately in one view/page.

Using this option in conjunction with the + tag you can organise your mails…

say you subscribe to several newsletters..register with the yourmailaddress+newsletters@gmail.com

Now create a label called “newsletters” and make a filter in such a way that all mails addressed To: “yourmailaddress+newsletters@gmail.com” should be labelled as “newsletters”…so now all mails/newsletters addressed to “yourmailaddress+newsletters@gmail.com” will be labelled as newsletters that can be viewed by just clicking the label “newsletters”.

Now this might not be great at first…but it obviously has an advantage over the conventional ‘folder’ organisation by creating a filter..remember there is a limit on the number of filters that you can create!..so try this tip and do post comments!
